I bought this new model Sony radio for my wife after her old Sony radio, the forerunner to this model finally died after many years. The analog tuner works well and lights up when the station is tuned in properly. The radio is not small, but it sounds good, and i'm sure it will last for years. For that purpose, it works very well, probably the best radio out there. Sony usually makes a good product and this radio is no exception. We also have a small Panasonic, but it doesn't compare as far as sound quality goes. It doesn't have TV bands because of the new digital TV rules, so it is a simpler radio, limited to AM and FM only. A weather band would have been nice, but it doesn't have one.
So, whatever size speaker this Sony radio has (3"). it sounds much better than the tinny speakers on a smaller "pocket" radio. It seems to be a worthy successor to the old model, which was very popular. If you don't need pocketability this is the radio for you.
Great radio for its simplicity with outstanding am fm reception and great sound quality (.specially the am stations) You can't go wrong.
I bought this to replace one I dropped. However, after getting used to it, it does tune well enough. Although this no longer offers TV sound (For obvious reasons) it's great for keeping close to hand, and taking it anywhere around the house and yard. My only complaint is the tuning wheel; I got used to the knob, from the previous model I had. The sound levels and clarity are very good for the type of listening I engage in, namely Talk Radio. All in all, for its type, this is a very good radio.
It is so hard to find a decent portable radio these days, everyone is switching to mp3 players. Older folks can't see or manipulate these small players and that's why there is a need for a portable AM/FM radio like the Sony IFC38. Maybe someday they will make a mp3 player that's sensitive to the need of the older generation. My father enjoys his new radio, I hope its not as hard to find another one.
I failed to read the dimensions and it's bigger than I had expected. The reception is so much better than the little pocket radio I had been using that I'm definitely keeping it.
